About Benjamin
Hello! I’m an interdisciplinary scientist who has studied under both the US and UK university systems, and recently moved back to London after finishing my PhD in engineering at MIT. My research investigates how nature produces colourful materials, such as bird feathers and butterfly wings, then applies that knowledge to creating new materials and devices. During my PhD I obtained Fulbright and Kennedy scholarships, among other awards, and my research has been published in journals such as Nature Materials and the Journal of Optics. Previously I received degrees in Computer Science from the University of Oxford and in Bioengineering from Imperial College London, and worked outside of academia in both government and industry research positions. I also have a strong interest in the connection between science and the arts, including my own work in photography and installation art. I firmly believe that STEM subjects don't have to be intimidating, and most importantly I understand how nerve-racking it can be to take exams and apply to university - I hope to make learning as fun as possible while giving students confidence in their abilities

I take a personalised, dialogic approach to teaching, not just covering a syllabus but more importantly learning how to learn, with a focus on building up from first principles instead of rote memorisation. I also aim to understand a student’s underlying interests and future ambitions, in order to develop a long-term education strategy from secondary school to graduate school. My experience includes teaching and mentoring MIT undergraduate and graduate students, as well as US high school students who were subsequently admitted to universities including Harvard and MIT. Lessons are ideally in-person, in central or north London, for two hours
