About Frances

I grew up in a musical household, and although I studied to become a lawyer (and graduated with a BA LLB from Wits University), I knew that music was the most important part of my life, and I couldn't imagine making a career out of anything else! I have many years' experience as a teacher, performer, as well as continuous learner of music, and am passionate about constantly improving my expertise and exploring the violin. I have graduated with a master's degree (MMUS) in jazz violin performance, where I did a deep dive into the techniques and styles of some of the world's greatest jazz and contemporary violinists - Stéphane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Tim Kliphuis. I aim to approach each student's needs or expectations as individually as possible. I love helping students achieve their goals using an approach that specifically suits them, whether that is based on reading music and meticulously analyzing the work, or helping them learn how to develop the skill of playing by ear in the most efficient way possible. I am highly focused on teaching correct technique and posture so as to avoid discomfort and injury, and find it particularly rewarding when a student overcomes any given obstacle by making various small adjustments to their playing.

About the lesson

I teach beginner to advanced students and tailor lessons to suit each student's individual interests and goals. I teach both classical and contemporary styles, and have a particular interest in helping classical violinists break free from the written page and explore the art of improvisation.

All lessons are bespoke and are structured around the following general options:

- Focusing primarily on classical repertoire and technique

- Incorporating alternative styles and techniques (jazz/rock/fiddle)

- Learning the art of improvisation (jazz, blues and rock)

- Learning music theory, transcription, and arranging techniques in order to develop your own compositions.

A typical lesson, regardless of the preferred method, would focus on warming up, (for instance with scales, finger exercises, or specific technical exercises like slow bowing), followed by working on the main focus at hand (eg a classical piece, or harmonic analysis of a jazz standard and improv techniques), and finally finishing off with a recap and overview of what was covered.

Lessons are generally offered in English, but are also available in Afrikaans or German, if required.
