About Mahin
I am an academic logician and philosopher. Over the summer of 2024 I will be writing up the thesis for my MPhil at King's College London. In October 2024 I will begin my PhD at the University of Oxford; my doctoral research will be an extension of my MPhil. My research pertains to logical paradoxes and their implications on the limits of reasoning, whether of human or artificial intelligences.
The stereotype goes that academics just want to do their research and barely tolerate their teaching duties, but this could not be further from the truth for me. I find teaching exciting and rewarding; taking a student from confusion to clarity on a difficult problem is an intellectual challenge I relish. I firmly hold to Richard Feynman's belief that "if you cannot explain something in simple terms, you do not understand it".
School and academic learning did not always go smoothly for me. I struggled with ADHD as a teenager and did not always have teachers who encouraged intellectual curiosity and ambition; I know deeply the value that a motivating teacher can have. I see it as my job to kindle (and rekindle, and maintain) my student's inborn curiosity to learn, and stoke the ambition to improve. These things are more valuable than the clearest explanation of algebra, or the pithiest line of instruction.

Before university I attended Raffles Institution in Singapore, a top Oxbridge/Ivy League feeder school. Exam prep at Raffles is strategic, thorough and provably rewarding. For students seeking results, I can provide a tutoring curriculum that measures and strengthens exam performance. For students seeking a deep and rich understanding of a field, I can provide a tutoring curriculum that philosophically motivates the problems that students learn to address, filling in the intellectual backstory behind the problems treated in the exam syllabus.
In my experience, the very best students do both. They are motivated by intellectual curiosity, but also the ambition to subject their abilities to rigorous testing and improve measurably.
