About Agnes
With three Teaching Assistant Excellence Awards from the Chemistry department at the University of Waterloo and outstanding evaluations from my supervising instructors and students, I have a proven track record of helping students understand university-level chemistry, build their confidence and inspire a genuine passion for chemistry. I currently tutor high school students in mathematics and chemistry, working with groups of 2-4 students simultaneously. I work well under pressure, communicate promptly with students via text and am highly flexible in adapting to their schedules.

My teaching methodology starts with helping students ace the fundamentals of a subject to build the confidence and foundation required to tackle more complex problems. I tailor my teaching approach to meet each student's individual learning style and needs, and I adjust my explanations when a particular method is not working for a student. For example, I use Zoom's whiteboard to draw diagrams and visually illustrate concepts for students that are visual learners. I also collaborate with students on the whiteboard in real time, allowing me to assess their understanding and provide immediate guidance when needed.
An example of my lesson plan would be the following:
Let's say you are a high school chemistry student who is struggling with drawing Lewis structures. First and foremost, I'd ensure that you have a strong understanding and are very confident in the fundamental structure of an atom:
- How does an atom look like? Where do the electrons live? Which electrons participate in bonding?
Once you have the necessary building blocks and a strong foundation in the matter, you can begin to build upon that knowledge. For example,
1. Start with a simple Lewis structure for a single atom (N or F).
2. Once you fully understand step 1, you can proceed to a diatomic molecule (Br2 or HCl).
3. Understanding the simpler structures from steps 1 and 2 will help you tackle more challenging structures, such as the carbonate ion.
I find that students learn best through repetition and positive reinforcement, so I have students solve a problem correctly several times to reinforce their understanding and ensure they have the confidence needed to perform in a fast-paced test situation.
My teaching abilities have earned me three Teaching Assistant Excellence Awards from the University of Waterloo. I teach high school mathematics, as well as high school and university level chemistry.
