About Lloyd
My name is Lloyd. I did well in school, but I struggled a lot because school is boring and difficult -- as I'm sure many of those learning in them will be happy to inform you. However, I found that the grades, the attention and the learning came so much easier when the teacher was fun, passionate, somehow seemed to enjoy teaching in a school, despite the abysmal wages, insane workload, and the occasional angry teenager shouting obscenities at them (and in one case, making a chair fly).
I went to Swansea uni to study psychology because I wanted to know what made learning hard, how to make it easy, and because I wanted to go to the beach. Then I studied Cognitive Neuroscience at York uni because I REALLY wanted to know how the brain works, and I ended up holding one, and they smell slightly like chicken -- a fact that has haunted me since I learned it. At least now I know, perhaps too much, the ins and outs of the brain (on that note, if you ever want to teach, learn a bit of developmental psychology, it works a miracle).
Armed with knowledge of the brain, I ended up working at a school as a teaching assistant. I thought I was going to be all bark and no bite, that my theoretical knowledge wouldn't apply, and that I would struggle, just as I did when I was a pupil.
Turns out that wasn't the case, and I was lucky enough to do really well from the start. I ended up being trusted to move between year groups and between SEN & mainstream at will, and sometimes by the day, with only a few minutes notice!
Since the classes I taught in tended to be on the smaller side, I got a lot of one-to-one experience in the classroom, as well as experience teaching full classes when teachers would suddenly become sick, substitutes would be left without a lesson plan, and even on one occasion just... forget. I value fun and whimsy, but I retain professionalism enough to maintain solid boundaries, respect the teacher-student dynamic, and you will not catch me dead forgetting to show up to my job.
To summarize, I bring together a strong understanding of how learning works, years of practical classroom experience, and an ability to make learning fun to help pupils feel confident and capable in their studies.

My goal as a tutor is simple: to make learning clear, engaging, and achievable for every student. With experience supporting both mainstream and SEN learners, I can break down difficult concepts into simple, manageable parts so students can build confidence and understanding at their own pace.
Every student learns differently, so my lessons are always tailored to the individual. Some students benefit from structured, step-by-step guidance, while others thrive with interactive discussion and problem-solving. I adapt my teaching style to suit each student’s learning preferences, helping them develop both subject mastery and independent study skills.
Also, perhaps missed by many others in education -- I do my absolute best to make it fun! Enjoyable! If learning is boring then no-one will want to learn!
Lessons typically last 60 minutes, giving us enough time to review previous material, work through new concepts, and practise exam-style questions where appropriate.
-- Qualifications & Experience --
I bring both academic knowledge and classroom experience to my tutoring. My qualifications include:
- Master’s degree in Cognitive Neuroscience (Uni of York - Top 10!)
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (Uni of Swansea)
- A-Levels and GCSEs across core subjects (NCEA L2&3)
- 3+ years of experience working in schools
This means I understand not only what students need to learn, but also how the brain learns most effectively.
-- Who My Lessons Are For --
My tutoring is best suited for students aged 11–16, particularly those preparing for NCEA level 2 or looking to strengthen their understanding of core subjects. I specialise in:
- Mathematics
- English
- Computer Science
- Psychology
Whether a student needs help catching up, boosting confidence, or pushing towards top grades, I provide supportive and structured lessons designed to help them succeed.
