I am actually a software engineering student, who happened to love teaching to young ones. In my little experience of part-time teaching I have realised that in order to make these little fellas focus in studies, we need to make it more practical and less theoretical for them.
Therefore I always start with good practical analogies and then proceed to the theory, that they might have a good idea by then. This happens to work great for Science, but for Maths it doesn't help much.
So rather than making the study topics interesting, I try to create an interesting study environment. This involves challenging them just like other kids, and I also believe that this aids them to compete in long run.
