About Courtney

Hi, I'm Courtney Hawkes! I’ve been an artist my entire life and I’m an experienced K–12 art educator who believes that every student can learn to make art—and, just as importantly, can learn to enjoy the creative process. I attended the Moore College of Art and Design (Philadelphia, PA) and UNC-Greensboro.

I am an experienced K–12 art educator with experience teaching students across a wide range of ages, abilities, and artistic interests.

I understand that teaching a kindergartener to draw is very different from helping a high-school student develop more advanced artistic skills. My lessons are therefore adapted to the student’s developmental level, experience, interests, and goals.

My teaching focuses on both artistic skill and creative confidence. Students learn fundamental concepts such as line, shape, form, color, value, composition, and technique while also having opportunities to experiment and develop their own creative ideas.

I enjoy helping students discover that art isn’t about being “naturally talented.” With practice, instruction, and encouragement, artistic skills can be learned and developed.

Online or In-Person: I offer flexible instruction and can work with students online or, when available, in person. If your child has a particular artistic interest or goal, I’m happy to design lessons around it. Let’s make something!

I have taught in Union County, NC and Lancaster County, SC. I have also worked as a commercial makeup artist, with agency representation, a photographer, and a henna-tattoo artist. I worked for the first company to offer henna tattoos as a luxury, salon service (in NYC). I also worked at the first Sephora in the US, also in NYC.

My work has been published in the NY Times, Paper Magazine, Essence Magazine, Charlotte Style Magazine, and Heart and Soul Magazine. My work has also been featured on Sábado Gigante for Univision and the indie film, Chutney Popcorn, by Nisha Ganatra, who most recently directed Freakier Friday. My work has been featured in ads for Burt’s Bees, Soffe Sportswear, Lane Furniture, Rockstar Wigs, Hanes, Gander Mountain, Thomasville, La-Z-Boy, Moen, and Primo Water.

About the lesson

K–5 Creative Art Lessons: Fun, age-appropriate art lessons designed to help younger students develop fundamental art skills while exploring their own creativity. Lessons may include drawing, painting, color theory, mixed media, illustration, art projects, and learning about famous artists. Projects are broken into manageable steps so students can experience success while still making their own creative choices.

Middle & High School Art: For students who want to strengthen their artistic skills, explore different media, develop their own style, or work toward a specific artistic goal. Lessons can focus on drawing, painting, composition, color theory, illustration, art history, mixed media, or developing a portfolio. Instruction is individualized according to the student’s current skill level and interests.

Art Portfolio Development: Individualized guidance for middle and high school students who are building an art portfolio or preparing artwork for school applications, programs, competitions, or personal projects. We can work on developing ideas, choosing appropriate pieces, improving technique, composition, presentation, and creating a cohesive body of work that reflects the student’s individual strengths and interests.

This will be my 11th year teaching and I offer personalized art instruction for students in kindergarten through 12th grade (including AP Art), from beginners who are discovering art for the first time to students who want to develop their skills further.

In the words of Keith Haring, “Art is for everybody.” Skill levels and confidence may vary, but this is where I can help guide students. It’s not always about the finished piece, it may be about what you learn along the way.

I appreciated how many different and new art techniques she taught us. For example we did portraits of artists by using lyrics of their songs to learn positive and negative space. While she was my teacher she continuously pushed us to think outside the box and to be creative.

Ms Hawkes was one of my favorite teachers from highschool!!! You could tell she cared a great deal about art and she was always sure to maintain a fun and comfortable environment for everyone in her class!

She always pushed me to develop my skills and is one of the reasons I felt confident enough to apply to art school! Even now as I finish my degree I miss her class! Definitely recommend her, 100%!
