About Chelsea
I currently work full time as a high school language teacher, and I have been tutoring on the side for many years. I hold Bachelor's degrees in both Spanish and French, with a minor in Linguistics, and a Master's in Education. I am licensed to teach both Spanish and French (K-12) in Oregon and have worked extensively with adults throughout my career.

I have been trained in both traditional and immersion-based teaching methodologies. I believe in learning languages by first using them to communicate, and then discussing language and grammar structures after seeing them in action. I am very skilled at presenting information in the target language (without speaking English) in a way that learners can easily follow along and pick up on other contextual cues to infer meaning, and I teach my high school classes in precisely this way. Students pick up the second language the same way they picked up their first: by experiencing it first hand using it with others. Once new grammatical structures or vocabulary have been presented, we go over the "how" and the "why" behind the way the new language works in English before moving forward with new concepts.
Everything I do as a teacher aims to create situations where my students are able to understand everything in the target language without falling back on English, and use contextual cues to infer new meaning and rapidly advance in their language acquisition - the more you can use the target language, the better! I also believe that it is extremely important to create a safe space to take risks in the language and make mistakes, as that is how we overcome the initial fear of speaking (which is often the one thing that stands in the way of language learners).
