About James

James has played piano for 19 years and oboe for over 12, taking his passion to college after high school where he persued a music degree at Utah State University on scholarship. He has experience in solo and symphonic performance. Over the years, James has added to his musical instrument proficiencies, picking up the organ, trumpet, English horn, and various other instruments, which he also teaches (for information on piano lessons, see his other add).
Still, this many years later, his main passion remains with the oboe and he continues to find every chance he can to play or simply pass on his knowledge and skills to other aspiring oboists.

From featured solos in classical pieces such as Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Dvorak's New World Symphony, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade to the modern scores of The Mission, Lala Land, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars, the Oboe and English Horn continue to be the most frequently featured instrument in history's most iconic melodies.
Oboists are always in demand. Most orchestras only have one, sometimes two oboists in comparison to most other wind sections that rarely drop below 4-5. This brings a particular challenge for most oboists, they must gain the confidence to play out confidently without a larger section to hide their voices in, with a higher individual standard of technique and precision than is typically expected of other instruments.
My approach aims to build this quiet confidence in oboists that allows the unique voice and texture of their instrument to be heard and appreciated. We will of course focus on technical exercises. My method uses an approach to technique, theory, and exposure to build this precision and confidence within each of my students.

While my main musical passion is oboe, I also have some experience and familiarity with a variety of other woodwind and brass instruments: trumpet, English horn, flute, piccolo, etc. to name a few (See my additional info section for rates and skill levels that I offer for these other instruments).
My approach for these is still very similar to my apporach to teaching oboe, especially the English Horn. I believe in a strong foundation in music theory no matter what instrument you play, and a focus on technique is my second priority. That being said, I will still generate plenty of opportunities for you perform to continually increase your confidence and manage performance anxiety.
