About Momen

I am originally from Cairo, Egypt. Growing up, I have always had a passion for teaching. However, I did not consider education as a career choice until I came to the U.S. as an exchange student in 2013. Shortly after my arrival, I participated in both band and choir. I was instantly fascinated by the world of music education. Since music was not a part of the Egyptian school’s curriculum, I had never experienced music in a classroom setting before coming to the U.S. As an exchange student in the U.S, I could finally come into contact with music in an educational manner. I witnessed the impact that music education made on my academic performance, social skills, and my overall wellbeing. I could not let go of such an outstanding learning experience. I wanted to provide this experience for others. Therefore, I pursued my degree in K-12 music education. I am honored to be in the field of education where I can give back and practice my passion on a daily basis.
My experiences with young people include working with international highschool students every summer of my college career. I have also tutored middle school students through the AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program. In the summer of 2017, I created a music workshop for 17 U.S students who came to Egypt for a two week summer exchange program. The goal of the workshop was to emphasize the role music plays in building bridges between different cultural/ethnic backgrounds in the world. I led participants in rehearsing and performing one song in English and one song in Arabic. Participants performed both pieces to their Egyptian host families.

About the lesson

I believe in culturally responsive, inclusive, and differentiated tutoring based on the unique needs of my students. By working in early childhood education and as an executive functioning tutor shortly after my graduation, I was able to put these teaching/tutoring theories into practice. My lessons are designed in a way that allows both the tutor and the student to be equally contributing in the learning process. I avoid limiting my focus on just the content area of tutoring, I also work with students on executive functioning and study skills. My main aim for my students is to become successful in the content area plus becoming initiative takers and independent learners in an academic sense.
