Music is similar to languages in that we learn it best by experiencing it! This means that the playing and creating is important, but so is listening, understanding, and experimenting. Students can expect to play their instrument, learn healthy technique, listen and respond to music, and engage with theory during their lessons.
I am a senior at Grand Valley State University. I have played violin for 12 years, and have played with Zeeland High School Orchestra, Holland Area Youth Orchestra, and Grand Valley Orchestra. I also play in chamber groups for events such as weddings. I was section leader and concert master in high school, and in college have served as president of our chapter of the American String Teacher Association (ASTA). I attended the 2018 and 2020 ASTA conferences and learned about including healthy technique in lessons of all levels, making all varieties of music fun for the student, and engaging students with different interests and learning styles.
