About Lucas

I help beginners feel comfortable with their music production quickly, and help intermediate producers get unstuck after years of feeling like they’ve hit a wall.

In the very first lesson, I strip music theory back to the essentials — often in about 20 minutes — showing how most popular music is built. From there, we jump straight into songs you love, while starting to train your ear so you become completely self-sufficient.

Students often say they wish someone had explained it "like this" or "this way years ago"

Alongside teaching, I’m an active producer and artist. I've been played on the BBC, JazzFM, Reprezent, RinseFM, Selector Radio, and have also worked and released with a great range of labels and artists. This ongoing professional work keeps my teaching grounded in real-world musicianship

My musical background is rooted in soul, jazz, and R&B, with artists like Lianne La Havas, D’Angelo, Daniel Caesar, James Blake, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis being major influences. That said, I tailor lessons to each student’s tastes and goals.

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions — I’d be happy to chat.

About the lesson

From chord progressions, to mixing, i'll take you through the entire process at a pace that is fun, low-stress, and engaging, all while using and studying the music, artists, and genres that *you* love.

In previous lessons i've covered topics like:

- Sampling
- Drum programming
- Melody writing, intervals, and "the right notes to pick"
- less boring chord progressions
- more colourful chord extensions
- interesting Alt chords
- 'Going outside of the scale'
- Finding the key by ear
- Mixing
- Mastering
- filling the stereo-field/mono compatibility
- what your favourite song is made of

If any of these are what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Lucas has been teaching my 11 year old piano for a couple of years. He is a fantastic teacher. Punctual and organised and great with kids. Making lessons more fun than they would be otherwise. Would highly recommend!

We've been having guitar lessons with Lucas for over 2 years now. He's a brilliantly encouraging and responsive teacher who can adapt to your particular interests - my 14 yo has quite an eclectic /non classical interest in music and Lucas has been brilliant at adapting lessons for him, as well as giving feedback and homework/guidance for what to focus on in between. Highly recommend him as a tutor!
