About Malia
I help people like you: ambitious, multi-faceted, diverse musicians of all genres go from feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by music theory and musicianship, to loving the learning process and connecting how all of these pieces work together.
Do you have goals as music director, creator (composing and producing), performer, songwriter, music business and law, or educator? Studying the materials of music is the starting point.
I want you to step on that stage, into that recording studio, and enter the rehearsal room with confidence. "Music theory," which often is an umbrella term for "music literacy" encompassing music-language knowledge, is the foundation to begin teaching, creating, and performing.
I struggled with the "music theory" part of my piano lessons, and that really showed when I got to community college. When I was in community college taking theory, I earned C's and D's. I DID. NOT. GET IT. I was upset and embarrassed. But it started to click in undergrad and I locked it down during graduate school. The process took a lot of grace and patience with myself. What was once a musical piece of me that felt foreign, became my strength and impacted me profoundly as a pianist. The theory-performing connection is real.
Fast forward to working on my doctorate in music theory where it finally clicked. Theory had a profound impact on myself as a pianist. I was hooked!
Theory never came easy to me. For this reason, I can train anyone because I know what it's like to struggle.
If you didn't grow up reading music and you're now learning as a young adult or adult, I will help you make sense of it all. I can help you succeed in music, too.
I've released music (Artist name, Malia Jade), published in peer-review journals, and teach Music Marketing in addition to Music Theory and Piano. This experience will come through in my lessons with you.
Now, I am YOUR music theorist, your music theory professor. Let me know how I can support your learning journey.

As a music theory professor (and piano prof) in real life, I tailor tutoring to each individual student's needs. You are: prepping for A.P. Music Theory, in college music theory, prepping for Certificate of Merit or ASBRM, prepping for music credential entrance exams, graduate school placement or entrance exams, or just coming back to music and want to work with someone who specializes.
Lessons online via Zoom. Possible in-person lessons in Pasadena or Los Angeles depending on availability. I usually schedule regular weekly or bi-weekly lessons for Fridays, but other days may be available.
Our first session (complimentary!) is a consultation for me to gather info about your musical goals and to see if we are a good fit. We will likely go over some musical concepts, discuss practice and study planning, approaches to how to best absorb the material, and I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have.
I'm the creator and founder of Music Theory Shop.
