About Richard
The son of comedy writer and lyricist Sid Kuller, Richard grew up in a show-business environment, then majored in English at the University of Redlands. As a child, he learned tap dance and theatrical traditions from the family of Donald O’Connor, who were authentic vaudevillians. During breaks in his high school and college years, as a gofer, then ASM, for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, he was exposed to and mentored in the process of producing musicals and operettas at the highest professional level. While working in the entertainment industry as a writer, director, actor, choreographer and dance teacher, he taught musical theater performance in the UCLA Musical Comedy Workshop and the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera Musical Theater Workshop at USC. Richard began teaching Tap Dance at Glendale Community College in 2002, and Tap, Jazz and Choreography at Pasadena City College in 2004. As an adjunct at both colleges, he has been kept busy for two decades, teaching theater as well as dance. At PCC, he established a summer triple-threat workshop, for which he wrote, directed and choreographed seven editions of its signature revue, Broadway Songbook. For Pasadena’s Rose Parade in 2008 and 2009, he directed the Tournament of Roses Honor Band Dancers. Beginning in 2020, the Covid pandemic created a two-year hiatus from both teaching and taking in-person classes. Richard has not yet returned to PCC, but is now back at Glendale College, teaching tap two days a week and contributing dance pieces, both to concerts and theater productions. Recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Opera/Musical Theatre Producer's Grant and Pasadena City College’s Academic Senate Distinguished Lecturer/Performer Award, Richard lives in Van Nuys with his wife, actress and teacher Suzanne Collins.
