My approach is pretty straight forward, regardless of instrument. First I will teach you your way around the guitar or bass. We will work on memorizing the neck, basic chord shapes (for guitar), as well as a few simple scale patterns.
Once those are mastered we will then work on music theory - this way you know the why behind the how.
By the time we are done you will know not just how to play, but how to use the instrument to express yourself musically. This will open a lot more doors for the serious student. And for the casual student...... well, you'll get some certified bragging rights. :-)
I have been playing guitar since 1996. I played in several rock and metal bands, then decided to expand out into experimenting with blues and jazz. Several years ago I started playing bass guitar as well. While the notes may appear the same (and they are!) the approach to the two instruments is completely different.
