About Brendan
My teaching approach is patient, conversational, and adapted to each student’s background and goals. As a teacher, my hope is that I provide my students with useful hermeneutics alongside relevant background material. I prefer to emphasize understanding, not simple memorization.

I have contributed volunteer musicological research and writing to Tempso, researching composers, repertoire, terminology, and the historical context of Western classical music (with a special emphasis on philosophy and aesthetics!). I am also the author of a forthcoming biography of Baroque lutenist and composer Silvius Leopold Weiss.
My areas of expertise include Renaissance and Baroque lute and guitar music, music history, historical theory, harmony, counterpoint, form, and score analysis. I can help students with music-history coursework, research and writing, listening assignments, score study, and understanding both primary sources and modern musicological scholarship.
