About Michael
I am a painter/educator. I have MFA and BFA degrees in painting with honors from Yale University School of Art and Architecture and USC’s School of Fine Art. As an undergraduate, I was awarded a fellowship to Yale University’s School of Music and Art in Norfolk, CT. My graduate curriculum includes courses with several renowned artist-educators – David Hockney, Jack Tworkov, Josef Albers, Robert Motherwell, Walker Evans, William Baily, Barbara Rose, and Al Held. Their methodologies and professorial passion inspired and instilled in me a lifelong love of art and teaching.

My student-centered studio classes are a combination of art history, formal and technical explorations, creative problem solving, critiques, lively discussions, and good humor. My objective as a teacher is to motivate my students to develop their unique learning interests and critical thinking—to establish a learner-centered classroom environment. I am an attentive listener, promoting and honoring each student’s singular background, diversity, and goals. An infectious curiosity, empathy, eclectic sensibility, and love of experimentation enhance my ability to guide and mentor students with very different interests.
