  • 1. Do you speak this language fluently because of your background, and what inspired you to learn it?

I am a true mix of cultures—my mother is Spanish, and my father is Bulgarian. Each of them spoke to me in their native language, so Spanish and Bulgarian became a natural part of me. As language teachers, my parents communicated with each other in English, which further enriched my linguistic skills. I studied at Aprilov High School, where I was ranked 6th out of 1,000 applicants, and where all subjects were taught in English. There, I chose German as my second foreign language and mastered it excellently.
My parents were my inspiration to study languages, and I am infinitely grateful for this opportunity. I realize that not everyone has such a chance, which is why I started teaching languages—to give people the opportunity to learn, to communicate, to grow professionally and personally, and to build bridges between cultures. I hope to support as many students as possible on their language journey and be there for them as they achieve their goals.
  • 2. Can you name a real, historical, or fictional character who, in your opinion, is an emblematic representative of linguistic culture?

One of the most emblematic characters in Bulgarian culture who represents linguistic richness and traditional values is Bay Ganyo (Бай Ганьо), the fictional character created by Aleko Konstantinov. While Bay Ganyo is often portrayed satirically, he also embodies an essential part of the Bulgarian spirit—resourcefulness, adaptability, and a deep connection to Bulgarian traditions.
Bay Ganyo is a traveling Bulgarian merchant who interacts with different cultures, demonstrating how language can serve as a bridge between people. Despite his often comical or exaggerated behavior, he represents the Bulgarian ability to navigate different linguistic and cultural landscapes while holding onto national identity. His character is emblematic because he reflects both the challenges and strengths of Bulgarian society—pride in tradition, quick wit, and the ability to adapt to different environments.
In a more positive light, Bay Ganyo can be seen as a symbol of the Bulgarian people's linguistic and cultural resilience, showing how language and tradition remain central to national identity despite external influences. His character, originally written as a satire, has grown into a cultural icon that continues to spark discussions about what it means to be Bulgarian.
  • 3. Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One Bulgarian tradition that I deeply appreciate is Survakane (Сурвакане). It is a beautiful New Year's custom that brings families together and symbolizes health, prosperity, and good fortune for the coming year.
On the morning of January 1st, children go from house to house carrying a survachka—a decorated cornel branch adorned with popcorn, dried fruits, wool, and colorful ribbons. They gently tap family members and friends on the back while reciting special blessing wishes, such as:
    "Surva, surva godina,
    vesela godina!
    Zlaten klas na niva,
    chervena yabalka v gradina!"
    This roughly translates to:
    "A prosperous, prosperous year,
    a joyful year!
    Golden wheat in the field,
a red apple in the garden!"
In return, children receive small gifts or money as a token of gratitude and blessing.
For me, Survakane is a touching tradition because it represents the importance of community, well-wishing, and starting the year with positive energy. It is a reminder of how simple gestures can carry deep meaning and strengthen bonds between generations.
  • 4. Why is it important to know this language?

Bulgarian is more than just a language—it is a gateway to a rich and ancient culture, a bridge to understanding the soul of the Balkans. Knowing Bulgarian allows you to connect deeply with history, as it is the first Slavic language to have a written script, the foundation of the Cyrillic alphabet used by millions today.
Speaking Bulgarian opens doors to authentic experiences in one of Europe’s most hospitable countries. It lets you truly appreciate the folklore, the traditional songs and dances, and the deep wisdom hidden in proverbs passed down for generations. If you love traveling, learning Bulgarian helps you discover hidden gems beyond tourist paths, where locals welcome you like family.
Moreover, mastering Bulgarian enhances cognitive skills, as it has unique grammar structures and expressions that sharpen the mind. Whether for personal growth, professional opportunities, or simply the joy of discovering a new linguistic world, learning Bulgarian is a journey into a language that echoes with history, poetry, and the warmth of its people.
  • 5. What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the learning process?

Learning Bulgarian can be challenging for many reasons. One of the biggest difficulties is the Cyrillic alphabet, which may seem unfamiliar to learners who are used to the Latin script. Additionally, complex grammar—especially verb conjugations, noun cases, and the use of definite articles—can be overwhelming. Pronunciation can also be tricky due to specific sounds that don’t exist in many other languages.
As a private tutor, I offer personalized lessons that help students overcome these challenges step by step. I use interactive methods, real-life conversations, and cultural insights to make learning engaging and practical. My experience of over 20 years teaching languages across three continents allows me to adapt to different learning styles and create a unique approach for each student.
What makes me unique as a tutor is my ability to simplify complex concepts and provide a supportive and motivating learning environment. I focus on communication and confidence-building, ensuring that students feel comfortable using Bulgarian in real situations. Whether you prefer online or face-to-face lessons, I tailor my teaching to your needs, making Bulgarian not just a subject to study, but a language to live and enjoy!
  • 6. How has a particular journey helped you improve your language skills and knowledge?

As a native Bulgarian speaker, my knowledge of the language is already excellent. However, traveling to different parts of Bulgaria has allowed me to experience cultural differences and better understand local dialects and unique words.
One memorable experience was my trip to the Rhodope Mountains, where I encountered a word I had never heard before—"чара". This word, used only in that region, refers to a special kind of charm or enchantment that the locals believe exists in their breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality. Such experiences deepen my appreciation for the richness and diversity of the Bulgarian language.
  • 7. What Makes You a Language Super-Professional?

An excellent private tutor should not only be a language expert but also an inspiring mentor. They must possess:
    - Patience and adaptability
    - The ability to motivate students
    - An individual approach to each learner
    - Creativity in teaching
    - A deep understanding of cultural differences
    - A passion for languages
    - Strong communication skills
    - The ability to explain complex concepts clearly
    - An understanding of student psychology

Additionally, they need organizational skills, flexibility in methodology, and innovation in creating practical situations for language practice. Most importantly, they should have the talent to turn learning into an enjoyable and inspiring experience.

The first lesson with me is free, so I invite you to give it a try—let’s embark on an exciting language-learning journey together!
Thank you for your time and attention!
