About Rick

I am a native Mandarin speaker and a high-achieving Honors student at Interlake High School with a 4.0 GPA. My approach to tutoring is built on the same principles that drive my own academic success: discipline, clarity, and a passion for excellence.

Having served as my school’s Student Council Treasurer, I understand the importance of responsibility and clear communication. My experience isn't just limited to the classroom; I have spent time in Inner Mongolia teaching Mandarin to students in rural communities. This experience allowed me to develop a unique pedagogical style—learning how to break down the complexities of a tonal language into manageable, logical steps for beginners.

I am not just a tutor who speaks the language; I am a student-leader who understands the modern academic landscape. I know what it takes to balance a heavy workload and master a difficult subject, and I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their own 'A-grade' breakthroughs while gaining a deep, authentic appreciation for Chinese culture.

Teaching Method & Techniques
I believe language learning should be active, not passive. My approach focuses on 'The 3 Pillars':

- Tonal Precision: Mastering the four tones early through repetitive, fun drills to ensure a native-sounding accent.

- Contextual Learning: Instead of just memorizing lists, we learn words through stories, current events, and daily conversation.

- The 'Bridge' Method: I use my experience as a high-achieving student to teach memory techniques (mnemonics) that help students remember complex characters (Hanzi) more effectively.

A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)
I keep lessons structured so students feel a sense of progress every time:

0-10m: The Warm-up & Review. A casual conversation about the student's day in Chinese using previously learned knowledge.

10-30m: New Concepts. Introducing a specific grammar point or 5–10 new characters using visual aids.

30-50m: Active Practice. Reading a short text together or role-playing a real-life scenario (like ordering food or asking for directions).

50-60m: Review & Feedback. Summarizing what we learned and setting a small, achievable goal for the next week.

What Sets Me Apart
I am both a Native Speaker and a Top-Tier Student who knows the stress of learning a language.

Pedagogical excellence: As a previous student council treasurer and honors student, I understand the pressure students are under. I don't just teach Chinese; I teach study habits and confidence.

Experienced: Having taught students in rural Inner Mongolia, I have experience working with diverse learning styles and know how to keep lessons engaging for people who are starting from zero or currently learning.

Who the Lessons are For:

Middle & High School Students: Those who want to take Chinese or currently taking Chinese courses equivalent to IB Chinese 1 AB Initio to IB Chinese 5 SL.

Young Beginners (Pre-School / Elementary Students): Those who want to build a strong foundation through interactive play and basic conversation.

Adult Enthusiasts: Anyone looking to learn practical Mandarin for travel or personal interest.
