About Jenny

I obtained my PhD in Applied Linguistics in the USA and my MA and BA in China. I started my career as an English teacher in a prestigious university in Beijing and has been teaching for over 20 years. While I was doing my PhD in the USA, I taught both English to international students and linguistics courses to native speakers of English. Since I moved to the UK, I have taught summer pre-sessional EAP (English for Academic Purposes) courses in universities at Bath and Nottingham. I have also written and published textbooks for university students in China.

About the lesson

I am a professional with an MA and a PhD in Applied Linguistics. I have 20+ years of experience teaching English in universities in China, USA and UK. Recently I obtained the Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages conferred by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and started teaching Chinese. Although most of my experience is teaching English to Chinese/international students, I believe that many skills I obtained from my professional training and teaching career are transferable to the teaching of Chinese.

The principal teaching methodology I use is communicative language teaching/learning, and the main target of my lessons is for communication, either in daily life or in academic settings. I design all sorts of tasks to engage my students in interactive activities. I also adopt different teaching methods with different groups of learners. For examples, with young learners I may use the method of TPR (total physical response) to make the lessons more active and engaging.

I also incorporate cultural activities into my language teaching. For instance, for the past Mid-Autumn Festival, my students made a presentation on their research findings about the festival, and then we worked together to make paper lanterns and design patterns for moon cakes. I always try my best to make my lessons interesting and enjoyable as well as informative and interactive.
