About Lance

I am a retired language loving person who has always found helping others, training, teaching etc. to be the most satisfying part of my work. Fortunately for me, my work over the years has always involved teaching/training, guiding and assisting others to reach their goals.
I particularly enjoyed running classes in Business Administration for groups of young job seekers and also basic computer skills for seniors.
My qualifications in English are informal however my experience extends over 58 years, much of which involved communication in business, academic and computing circles with people of with enormously diverse backgrounds and interests. I have a Bachelor Degree in Business (Administrative Management) from the University of South Australia and am also a qualified Conveyancer, ( so I speak Legalese too). My personal studies in language has included English, Old English (aka Anglo-Saxon), German, Esperanto, Norwegian, Mandarin, Pitjantjatjara and Welsh (as well as Klingon and Sindarin, just for fun) - although I will only claim any degree of proficiency in the first four. As a result of those studies I am familiar with various grammars, linguistics, phonetics and phonemics but I don't go into mindbending technical detail with them and with both standard and not so standard orthographic systems.

About the lesson

I take education very seriously which means, as far as I am concerned, that it should be fun - or at least an enjoyable experience for all. Real learning is near impossible if the learner gets no enjoyment from the process. Language learning is best done by full immersion into the culture but for most learners that isn't an option so I try to create programs tailored to the needs of learners centred around conversation and literacy in 'normal', everyday English as it is used by real people. My intention being to have learners become not only competent but also confident in using English in their daily lives. The technicalities of grammar, while important in every language, are rarely on the tip of one's tongue (sorry, bad pun) so my teaching style and lesson plans reflect that. (Although I am always happy to explore the technicalities, history & development of English if it meets the learner's needs & interests.)
