About Songlan

I am a native Japanese speaker living in Irvine, California, with 20 years of teaching experience. I have worked as a private Japanese tutor since 2006, and as a professional teacher at Japanese schools and language schools in Orange County: the Japanese Language School Unified System in Irvine (2016–2022), and currently Hinoki Educational Services in Tustin and Language Door in Irvine, teaching students from elementary school age to adults, including busy executive clients. I am also a professional Japanese–English interpreter and translator, and I work as a tour guide for Japanese visitors and in guest relations at Angel Stadium. I speak Japanese, English and Korean.

About the lesson

My lessons are in person — we meet face-to-face at a café such as Starbucks in the Irvine or Tustin area, in a relaxed setting that makes speaking feel natural. The lessons are conversation-based and fully personalized. For Japanese lessons, we speak Japanese from day one at your level, focusing on practical phrases you can use right away for travel, dining, business, and daily life. I explain grammar and particles in a clear, simple way, and coach your pronunciation so you sound natural. For Japanese speakers learning English, I explain everything clearly in Japanese, so you finally understand the grammar points that textbooks make confusing. Every lesson is built around your goals, whether that is a trip to Japan, a Japanese-speaking workplace, family communication, or work and travel English. Beginners are very welcome, and mistakes are a natural part of learning with me.
