About Patience
Jambo! My name is Patience Wamalwa and I am proudly from Lamu Island — the oldest Swahili town and home of pure, original Kiswahili.
Growing up in Lamu Old Town, Kiswahili was not just a subject in school — it was the language of my grandmother's stories, the fishermen at the seafront, and the Friday songs at the mosque. That pure Lamu Kiswahili is what I will share with you, not the mixed Swahili you hear in big cities.
I became a professional teacher 10 years ago because I love helping people communicate. I hold a PTE certificate, a Diploma and Degree in Special Needs Education, and a Certificate in Kenya Sign Language. For the last few years, I have been teaching amazing Deaf learners in a Deaf school — this taught me to be the most patient, visual, and joyful teacher you will ever meet. I believe every student can learn.
When I am not teaching, I love exploring Lamu alleys with my friends, drinking fresh madafu, and teaching tourists how to say their first Swahili words.
I would love to welcome you to my language and culture. Karibu sana!

Jambo! I am Teacher Patience a native Kiswahili teacher from Lamu Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage site — the home of the original, pure Kiswahili).
I am a fully certified professional teacher with 10+ years experience:
• Certificate in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) • Diploma & Degree in Special Needs Education • Certificate in Kenya Sign Language (KSL) • Currently teaching in a Deaf school in Kenya
WHO ARE MY LESSONS FOR?
• Complete beginners who have never heard Kiswahili • Travellers coming to Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar who want to speak like a local, not a tourist • Expats living in East Africa • Anyone who wants patient, visual, and joyful learning
WHAT WILL WE DO IN A TYPICAL 50-MINUTE LESSON?
First 10 mins: Warm greetings & review – We practice heshima (respect) greetings that Lamu elders love.
Next 25 mins: Practical Role-Play – No boring grammar! We learn what you NEED for real life:
• How to bargain at Lamu market without being overcharged • How to order pilau, biryani, fresh juice and explain allergies • How to take a dhow, matatu, tuktuk and ask for directions • How to make local friends and talk about your culture
Next 10 mins: Visual Pronunciation Practice – Because I teach Deaf learners, I use very clear visual methods, facial expressions, and my own voice notes so you pronounce like a Lamu native.
Last 5 mins: Your Personal Pack – After every lesson you get PDF notes, voice notes for pronunciation, and a small fun homework from daily life in Lamu.
MY TEACHING STYLE
Extremely patient, encouraging, and adaptive. I have zero judgment for mistakes — we celebrate them! Because of my Special Needs and Sign Language background, I can teach ANY learner at their pace, even if you are shy or nervous.
Book your first lesson today and in 30 minutes you will already greet someone properly, introduce yourself, and bargain politely. Niko tayari kukufunza — I am ready to teach you!
