About Ginger

I am a native Mandarin speaker from China, now a Singapore resident. My background is a slightly unusual mix: I hold a bachelor's degree in law from Donghua University and a second bachelor's degree in English from East China University of Political Science and Law, I passed China's National Judicial Examination, and I am currently completing a master's degree in counseling psychology delivered in Singapore in partnership with National Tsing Hua University. I also hold Putonghua Proficiency Level 2-A certification.

For the past two years I have also worked with an inbound travel agency here in Singapore, hosting Mandarin-speaking visitors and working daily between Chinese and English. It has kept my Mandarin firmly in the real world rather than the classroom, and it means I can teach you the language people actually use — for directions, food, small talk, negotiating and getting things done in Singapore.

Studying law taught me to break complicated systems down into clear, logical pieces, which is exactly what Chinese grammar and character structure need. Earning a second degree in English meant learning a foreign language properly as an adult, so I know how discouraging it feels to understand a rule perfectly and still freeze when you have to speak. And psychology gave me the part most language teachers are never trained in: how to keep a learner motivated when progress feels slow.

I teach Chinese because I enjoy the moment a student stops translating in their head and simply says what they mean. I am patient, well organized, and I take my students' goals seriously. Whatever your level, I would be glad to hear what you want to achieve.

My lessons are built around what you actually need Chinese for — ordering confidently at a hawker center, passing an exam, talking to your partner's family, or handling meetings with Mandarin-speaking clients. Before we start, I like to have a short chat to understand your goals, current level and how you learn best, and then I build a personalized plan around that rather than following a fixed textbook.

A typical lesson runs 60 minutes: a short warm-up review, 30–35 minutes of new material taught through guided conversation and realistic situations, then time for pronunciation correction and consolidation. I place strong emphasis on tones and pinyin from the very first lesson — I hold Putonghua Proficiency Level 2-A certification, so you will be learning clear, standard Mandarin pronunciation. Characters and writing are optional and paced to your goals; many learners want speaking and listening only, and that is completely fine.

I am currently completing a master's degree in counseling psychology, which shapes how I teach. Many adults have given up on Chinese before because they felt embarrassed or overwhelmed, so my lessons are deliberately low-pressure: mistakes are information, not failure. I also read a learner's frustration early and adjust the pace before it turns into avoidance.

I hold a law degree and a second bachelor's degree in English, so I can explain grammar clearly in English for complete beginners, and I am equally comfortable with HSK candidates, primary and secondary students in Singapore, and professionals who need business or legal Chinese.

Lessons are available online or face-to-face in Singapore, for children, teenagers and adults at any level.
