About Sophia
I was born and raised in China and am a native Mandarin speaker with a Level 2-A certificate in the Mandarin Proficiency Test. I also have previous experience teaching English to middle and high school students in China, which gave me a strong foundation in language teaching, communication, and working with learners at different levels.
I later completed a Master’s degree in International and Intercultural Communication in Canada. Living and studying in both China and Canada has given me a strong understanding of cross-cultural communication and the different challenges students may face when learning a new language.
I am patient, approachable, and attentive to individual learning needs. I enjoy explaining ideas clearly, encouraging students to speak with confidence, and creating a comfortable environment where making mistakes is simply part of learning.
As someone who understands both Chinese culture and international learning environments, I hope to help students not only improve their Mandarin, but also gain a more natural and meaningful understanding of Chinese communication and culture.

My lessons are personalized, practical, and designed around each student’s goals and learning style. I focus on helping students understand not only what to say in Chinese, but also how and when native speakers actually use different expressions.
For beginners, we can start with Pinyin, tones, pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and useful everyday sentence patterns. For students with some Chinese experience, lessons can focus more on conversation, natural expression, pronunciation correction, and real-life communication.
I use clear explanations, examples, situational practice, and plenty of interaction so that students can gradually build confidence speaking Chinese. As a native Mandarin speaker with language-teaching experience and a Master’s degree in International and Intercultural Communication, I can also explain cultural differences and communication habits when they are relevant to the lesson.
My lessons are especially suitable for adult beginners, international learners, travelers, and anyone interested in practical Mandarin and Chinese culture. I can also explain difficult concepts in English when needed.
