About Yujia
Hi! I am Yujia — you can also call me Yuj.
I'm a native Mandarin speaker from Zhejiang, China, now based in Brooklyn, with a Mandarin certificate. I hold an MFA and work bilingually across Chinese and English every day as an artist and writer.
Language and culture are at the center of how I think and create, and I bring that same curiosity to teaching.
Having lived in both China and the US for so many years, I've taught both languages to students of all levels. I genuinely find purpose in introducing and familiarizing my students to Chinese as a language, a culture, and in helping them understand the fundamentals of its way of thinking.
Ready to learn? With a little fun along the way?

Language shapes the way we speak and think, so learning one should be fun, natural, and interesting. My style is not for people who just want to pass a test.
We always start with a conversation — your questions, or homework from last class — then move seamlessly into pinyin and break characters down into radicals and their phonetic parts. Sound is a big element, so we'll be patient but assertive about getting pronunciation and tone right. I have plenty of experience teaching both languages to people with seemingly unchangeable accents.
I'll also teach you slang, cultural references, and insider knowledge — for example, you'll be able to flex that Jackie Chan's Chinese name (Cheng Long) means "to become a dragon." Most of all, you'll understand the logic behind the language, so that with enough pieces you can often guess your way to the rest.
Most classes are conversation-based, alongside slides. We'll also learn to write through Chinese calligraphy — another way of presenting and appreciating a language. After each session, I'll compile a short file on your strengths and weaknesses so we can track your progress.
You're in the right place if you are:
- completely new to the language and its structure
- curious about Chinese culture
- hoping to hold daily conversations effortlessly
- ready to learn with consistency and fun
What I look for in a student:
- open-minded and eager to learn
- believes in consistency (I'll help you)
- genuinely interested in the language and culture, not just passing an exam
Looking forward to learning together!
