About Catarina

I am a native Portuguese speaker. I have been a teacher for 6 years and teaching Portuguese specifically for 3. I worked in study centers and online. I have a degree in Psychology and although this is still a great passion, I didn't think the practical, career aspect of it would suit my personality so I went in search of something different. I travelled around the world and started teaching English to support myself. That's when I realized that I really enjoyed teaching, and that's what I've been doing ever since.

Three years ago I also started teaching Portuguese (my native language) and it is equally interesting, if not moreso. I always wanted to try teaching online but I wasn't sure how to start, but now that I've started, I can say that for me it is more effective and rewarding (and convenient) than regular classes. I hope to soon be able to get to know you and also that you can get to know me, my method, my experience, and what a class is like with me. I hope to see you soon!

About the lesson

I can help you with specific things like grammar and interview preparation, but my specialty is conversational classes. It is a very interesting and rewarding process, and it achieves my main goal - getting you to speak the language. The best way to get comfortable with a new language is to practice it - over and over and over again. Even if your main problem is grammar, this is polished by the constant use of language in a practical context. So that's what I try to do in my classes - make you speak as much as possible. I want you to be comfortable with the idea of making mistakes, because we all make them when we are learning a new language, it is an essential part of the process. But the freer you feel, the more you speak and the more you learn. I will also give you lots of tips about the Portuguese people and culture, if that interests you, to help you better navigate the reality here.

In the first class I will evaluate your current level of Portuguese with some questions and tests, and I will also want to get to know you, to know what motivated you to want to learn Portuguese, your needs and interests, because that will help me adapt future classes to you. After all, we all learn best when the material used is relevant to us. Then our journey can begin! I will use all kinds of materials to help us - videos, texts, exercises. You won't regret having started this journey.
