About Iain
I am a lifelong learner with a passion for sharing that learning with others. Since I was at school, I have been fascinated by how the world works and ways we can describe and predict it, and this led me to focus on sciences. It is my ambition to inspire others to a similarly high level of enthusiasm for the world around us and tutoring offers me the opportunity to do just that. I am committed to providing the very best level of tuition for you and, if you work with me, I'm sure we can make great progress together.

For me, science and maths are about ways of thinking, not lists of facts to remember. In my classes, I like to foster a problem-solving approach where I encourage my students to deduce as much as they can from what they already know. This is a skill that has applications beyond academic study and one which I fear is undervalued in mainstream education.
My teaching philosophy is heavily influenced by my university education. In 2016, I graduated from Trinity Hall, Cambridge with a Masters in Natural Sciences (2.i), specialising in chemistry. Whilst studying, I tutored secondary age pupils in maths and I have since expanded to tutoring science subjects too. From 2018 to 2020, I spent two years in Beijing, teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to adult students. Since my return to the UK, I have broadened my teaching experience with work in secondary schools and facilitating OET language exams for the British Council. In 2018, I acquired the TSA Professional Tutoring Certificate with distinction.
Lessons with me typically last from one to two hours. Depending on the level and age of the student, a longer lesson time can allow for more in-depth discussions and more extensive practice. I'm happy to teach students from KS3 (11 years old) up to A-level.
