About Emily
Hi! I’m Emily, a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts Amherst studying Neuroscience. In high school, I was a National Merit student, graduated in the top 10% of my class, and earned academic recognition for my work. I currently attend UMass Amherst on an academic scholarship, including the UMass Amherst Dean’s Award, and I’m also part of the Honors Program.
I’ve been tutoring for over 4 years and have worked with students across many grade levels. My tutoring style is supportive, organized, and very step-by-step. I focus on building a strong foundation, explaining concepts in a clear way, and helping students feel confident applying what they learn to homework, quizzes, and exams.
I’m also involved in a national women-in-STEM organization, which reflects how important education, leadership, and academic growth are to me. I take professionalism seriously and always come prepared with a plan and a positive attitude. My goal is for every student to leave each session feeling less stressed, more capable, and proud of their progress.

Hi! I’m Emily, and my goal as a tutor is to make math and science feel clear, manageable, and way less stressful. I teach in a calm, supportive way and focus on why something works, not just memorizing steps, so you can actually remember it on quizzes and exams.
My teaching style is very step-by-step and personalized. I’ll break problems down into simple chunks, show you patterns to look for, and give you shortcuts only after you understand the main idea. I also use active practice (not just watching me do it), because that’s how you build real confidence and speed.
A typical lesson with me looks like this:
1. Quick check-in: what you’re learning, what’s confusing, and what’s coming up (homework/test).
2. Mini-lesson: I teach the concept in a simple way with examples and notes you can reuse later.
3. Guided practice: we do problems together and I talk through my thinking.
4. You try, I coach: you solve problems while I help you fix mistakes and stay organized.
5. Wrap-up + plan: we review what you learned and I give a small set of practice questions or a study plan if needed.
What sets me apart is that I adjust to your learning style. If you need quick help for homework, I can be efficient and straight to the point. If you want deeper understanding, I’ll teach it more slowly and thoroughly until it clicks. I’m also big on helping students feel confident—no judgment, no pressure, and you can ask the same question as many times as you need.
My lessons are best for middle school through high school students, and I can also help with introductory college-level topics depending on the class. I’m especially helpful for students who feel overwhelmed, get stuck easily, or want a tutor who explains things in a clear and patient way. I tutor math and science, including topics like pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, basic statistics, biology, and chemistry.

I am writing to recommend Emily as an exceptional tutor. Emily worked with my child for chemistry when my child was a sophomore in high school, and I can confidently say she made a real difference both academically and in my child’s confidence.
From the beginning, Emily was patient, organized, and extremely prepared. Chemistry can be an intimidating subject, but she had a way of breaking down complex topics into simple steps that actually made sense. She didn’t just give answers—she explained the “why” behind the material and made sure my child understood the concepts well enough to apply them independently.
Emily was also very reliable and professional. She always came to sessions with a plan, stayed focused on goals, and adjusted her teaching style depending on what my child needed that week, whether it was homework help, test prep, or reviewing foundational skills. Over time, I noticed my child became more confident participating in class and performing better on quizzes and exams.
I highly recommend Emily to any family looking for a tutor who is knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping students succeed. She is an excellent teacher and a great role model, and I am thankful for the impact she had on my child’s academic progress.View more recommendations
