About Katharine
I graduated from University of Connecticut in May 2015. I majored in biology on the pre-med track and minored in human rights. I have been teaching the sciences, humanities, and organizational study skills for eight years as a private tutor. At UConn, I was an administrative assistant at the Homer Babbidge Library and organized payroll for upwards for 300 students. I also volunteered at the Willimantic AIDS clinic and was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. I was awarded the greek life academic achievement award during my time at UConn. I began tutoring while I was in high school as a volunteer for the Bridgeport School Volunteer Association. At 15, my first student was a 4th grade girl who was about to repeat the fourth grade for the third time. Through my time with her, she was able to progress to the 7th grade and is now in high school. In the past three years, I have become more specialized in tutoring for science standard exams and frequently tutor in AP Biology, AP Chemistry, SAT II Biology, and SAT II Chemistry. However, I also have students that I tutor in all subjects ranging from all ages ranging from middle school to college. I feel my students succeed when they are motivated, organized, and engaged in the material. I support my students by creating study schedules, finding new and creative ways to explain materials or supplement their current understanding, and providing one-on-one support personalized to the students' needs. I find joy in de-stressing students by creating a workable, organized plan to address their concerns.
Two years ago, I studied for and took the MCAT. I scored in the top 15 percentile. I have been helping students prepare for the MCAT for the past ten months. All of my students' scores have significantly increased since beginning tutoring. I have taken every single practice exam available and know the best resources to use for the exam. During most of my sessions, we create a study plan in order to structure your time effectively and focus on the areas you need to improve in (this is usually done in the first session where I interview you to figure out what we need to focus on). Once we create a plan, these sessions are usually used to go over tricky questions from practice exams or confusing concepts. We also do a "de-briefing" about each practice exam to analyze your testing strategy and see where we can make little tweaks. If there are any concepts you want to go over that are confusing, we can also address them in the session as well and use the online whiteboard to do problems in real time. That is also how I prepare practice questions. If possible, I prefer my students to let me know ahead of time what they want to go over so I can prepare practice questions/helpful videos/any helpful links I have at my disposal. I give my phone number to all of my students and if you have any questions day or night, I am here and will answer as soon as possible.
I use an online interactive whiteboard to explain concepts and enjoy sharing the multitude of MCAT resources at my disposal. I have taken most of the practice tests available and know which materials are most helpful and similar to the exam. If anyone is in the Fairfield County area, I am available for in-person tutoring as well. I also help with the medical school application process and tutor in Biology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cell Biology, and Genetics. If you are interested, feel free to message me!
I am currently a second-year medical student at the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine. I was pre-med throughout my undergraduate career and excelled in my science classes. I have been tutoring in math and science subjects for 9 years.
