About Alex
I attended Northwestern University, where I studied music and African history, while maintaining a steady course load in advanced topics in math and computer science (including linear algebra, multivariable calculus, real analysis and abstract algebra). I received my masters degree from Oxford, where I continued my music education.
I worked for several years as a freelance musician, joining the staff of the Metropolitan Opera and Salzburger Festspiele as a pianist and opera coach. During the covid pandemic, I transitioned into a career in tech and eventually worked as a software engineer at Bloomberg.
As an alum of New York City's competitive Stuyvesant High School, I'm aware of the intense pressures facing students – particularly high school students concerned with college admissions – as well as the toll that a heavy amount of homework and other responsibilities can take. My tutoring practice therefore strives to never be stressful, and I let students take the lead in determining the pace of instruction.

My experience as a tutor has taught me how to break down complex problems and ideas into simple steps, and how repeated practice of challenging material can help students to grow confidence in their abilities.
As a student, I struggled heavily with math all throughout grade school, but through the right balance of effort and focus, I was eventually able to score an 800 on both the math SAT section as well as the (now defunct) more advanced SAT subject test in math. The process I went through that transformed math from my weakest to strongest subject forms the basis for my work as a tutor.
I've taught dozens of students from the middle school level through college-level calculus. For those preparing for exams, I offer comprehensive reviews and can guarantee substantial improvement over diagnostic/practice test scores. I've also helped many students simply keep up with their regular course assignments. In addition, I've worked with a variety of adults at all ages improve their math skills for professional reasons or just as hobbies.
Feel free to inquire about my tutoring in music theory and computer science as well.
