About Allen
Allen is a down-to-earth person that is easy to talk to. He is also very good at explaining things in a way you can understand. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University, a Master’s in Engineering Mechanics from Clemson, and a PhD in Engineering from the University of New Mexico.
He worked at the prestigious Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a decade where he worked on and managed super cool projects like crash-testing structures using rockets. He has designed/analyzed structures and had them fabricated for testing and delivery to customers.
Allen is also an expert in software development and led projects incorporating complex physics, math, and engineering in software. One of the products he managed is used by the US Air Force to plan attacks on ground targets with conventional and nuclear bombs.
Allen progressed through his last company to an executive management role as Chief Systems Officer. He is a registered professional engineer, a PMI-certified project management professional, and certified to ITIL Foundation 4 (an IT certification). He has held a Top Secret Department of Defense clearance since 1989.
He has been married for 36 years, has three kids (all engineers), and has hobbies of staying in shape and racing a 2006 Mini Cooper and 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4.

Regardless of age, I first establish a rapport with the student. It is important the students feel comfortable talking because I need them to speak and tell me what they do and do not understand. People find me easy-going and easy to talk with, which is good for encouraging interaction. I will begin the first lesson with small talk so that we get to know each other. I will use various prompts to get them talking, and once there is a comfort level I will start asking about academics and the specific tutoring topic.
I will ask about some of their academic history – what are their typical best and worst classes? I will ask about background on the topic - have they always found the topic difficult or is it just this semester/teacher/professor?
With the above information in hand, we will start the lessons. Depending on the student and their needs, we will go over key concepts needed for the topic, work sample problems, and/or work homework problems.
Some philosophies of mine…
One of the most important concepts in math and physics is learning not to be intimidated by a question that seems impossibly difficult on the first read and knowing that a hard problem is made up of several not-so-hard smaller problems that can be solved.
Sometimes students are frustrated when they are struggling and turn against the topic asking “why do I need to know this?” Luckily, I have a long background in using math and physics in work and personal life and look forward to conveying compelling examples to convince a student they not only need to know the topic, but it will help them be successful. I had a highly successful career in the defense industry and raised three kids that all have master’s degrees in engineering. I am a hands-on person who can diagnose and fix just about anything in a home and on my race cars and have tons of fun, real-world stories related to these things.
Writing problems down and drawing diagrams is vitally important. There is a mystical connection between the pen/pencil, your hand, and your brain that cannot be substituted by just reading PowerPoint charts, a screen, or dry-erase/chalk board.
