About Gloria

I am a New York State-certified mathematics teacher with five plus years of teaching experience in the New York City public school system. I hold a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science from Baruch College.

I currently teach Algebra II and AP Statistics at a NYC public high school, where I work with students of diverse academic backgrounds and learning abilities. My classroom experience has given me a strong understanding of mathematics curricula, effective instructional strategies, and the challenges students commonly face when learning new concepts.

As both a classroom teacher and an experienced private tutor, I take pride in creating a supportive, patient, and engaging learning environment. I understand that students learn at different paces, and I believe that building confidence is just as important as mastering mathematical skills. I encourage my students to ask questions, think critically, and develop the independence needed to succeed academically.

I also have extensive experience conducting online tutoring sessions using Zoom. My virtual lessons are interactive, structured, and personalized to each student's needs.

My teaching philosophy focuses on building a strong conceptual understanding rather than simply memorizing formulas and procedures. I recognize that every student learns differently, so I tailor my instruction to each student's strengths, challenges, learning pace, and academic goals.

I use clear, step-by-step explanations, visual representations, real-world applications, and guided practice to make challenging mathematical concepts more accessible. I also encourage students to explain their reasoning and ask questions, helping them develop critical thinking skills and confidence in their mathematical abilities.

Each session is structured around the student's individual needs and current coursework. A typical 45-minute lesson includes:

* 10 minutes: Review previously learned concepts, address homework questions, and identify areas of difficulty.

* 15 minutes: Introduce or reinforce key concepts through clear explanations, examples, and interactive discussions.

* 20 minutes: Work through guided practice problems, gradually encouraging students to solve problems independently.

Lessons are flexible and can also focus on upcoming exams, homework support, challenging topics, or enrichment beyond the classroom curriculum.

Unlike tutors who focus solely on helping students complete assignments, I bring the perspective and experience of a full-time NYC public school mathematics teacher. I understand curriculum expectations, common student misconceptions, and the skills students need to succeed both in the classroom and on assessments. I currently teach Algebra I and II and AP Statistics, giving me experience supporting students in developing mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of complex concepts. I also have extensive experience with online tutoring. Most of my tutoring students learn virtually, and I use interactive Zoom sessions to create an engaging learning environment. With appropriate consent, lessons can be recorded and shared so students can revisit explanations and reinforce their understanding between sessions.

I work with middle school and high school students of varying skill levels. Whether your child is struggling with math or looking for an additional challenge, my goal is to help them become a more confident, capable, and independent learner.
