About Don

I am an experienced educator and STEM professional with a strong background in teaching, tutoring, and scientific communication. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Astrophysics, with a minor in East Asian Studies, from Ohio Wesleyan University, and I currently serve as a staff astronomer and teaching assistant at Perkins Observatory. In this role, I regularly instruct university students, support coursework, and explain complex scientific concepts to learners of all backgrounds.

In addition to my university experience, I work as a tutor with A Grade Ahead, where I help students strengthen their skills in math and science through clear explanations, structured practice, and individualized support. I am patient, well-organized, and attentive to each student’s needs, ensuring that lessons are both effective and encouraging.

My professional background also includes technical and administrative responsibilities, which have strengthened my reliability, preparation, and communication skills. Students and families can expect punctuality, clear expectations, and a respectful learning environment. I take pride in maintaining high academic standards while creating a supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence.

Above all, my goal is to help students understand the material deeply, improve their academic performance, and develop the confidence to succeed independently.

Approach as a Tutor and Knowledge Sharing

My approach as a tutor is student-centered, structured, and adaptable. I focus on building strong conceptual understanding while meeting each student at their current level of knowledge and confidence. Drawing on my experience as both a tutor and an instructor in astronomy and STEM fields, I emphasize clarity, curiosity, and practical problem-solving.

Teaching Method and Techniques

I combine guided instruction with active learning. Rather than simply providing answers, I lead students through the reasoning process, encouraging them to articulate their thinking and ask questions. Key techniques include:

Conceptual scaffolding: Breaking complex topics into manageable steps and building upward.

Socratic questioning: Helping students discover solutions through targeted questions.

Visual and real-world analogies: Especially effective for abstract concepts in math, physics, and astronomy.

Practice with feedback: Working through problems together, then independently, with immediate correction and explanation.

Adaptation to learning styles: Adjusting pacing and presentation based on whether a student learns best visually, verbally, or through repetition.

Typical Lesson Plan

A typical tutoring session follows a clear structure:

Check-in and review (5–10 minutes): Identify goals for the session and review previous material or homework.

Concept reinforcement (15–20 minutes): Explain key ideas using examples, diagrams, or demonstrations.

Guided practice (20–30 minutes): Work through problems together, gradually shifting responsibility to the student.

Independent application (10–15 minutes): Have the student solve problems on their own while I observe and coach.

Wrap-up and planning: Summarize key takeaways and outline what to practice before the next session.

This structure ensures steady progress while remaining flexible to address immediate challenges.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

What distinguishes me is my combination of deep subject knowledge, teaching experience, and strong communication skills. As a staff astronomer and teaching assistant, I regularly translate complex scientific concepts for diverse audiences, from university students to the general public. I also bring patience, encouragement, and professionalism, helping students build confidence as well as competence. My background in technical support and education allows me to explain not just what works, but why it works.

Who the Lessons Are For

My tutoring is suited for:

Elementary through high school students needing support in math and science fundamentals

College and university students, particularly in introductory and intermediate STEM courses (physics, astronomy, math)

Students seeking academic reinforcement, homework help, or exam preparation

Learners who benefit from structured guidance, clear explanations, and confidence-building instruction

I tailor lessons to the student’s academic level, curriculum, and specific goals, whether they are catching up, keeping pace, or aiming to excel.
