About Jack
I believe I am well-qualified to teach you because of my unique combination of cultural, academic, and personal experiences. I believe firmly that language is more than just imparting vocabulary—it involves introducing learners to a new culture, mastering the scientific methods of instruction, and embodying the qualities of a great teacher. These three aspects form the foundation of effective language teaching, and I believe my background equips me to excel in each of them.
1. Teaching Language as Transmitting Culture
Teaching a language is not just about words; it’s about teaching a way of seeing the world, a new culture, and a different perspective on life. My bicultural background, having grown up in France as a native Irishman, gives me a unique insight into navigating between cultures and understanding how they shape language. My degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester has further deepened my understanding of how culture and language intersect. This dual perspective—of being both an insider and an outsider—allows me to guide students not just in learning a language but in immersing themselves in the culture it represents.
2. Teaching Language as a Science
Language teaching also involves mastering the methodologies and techniques that make learning effective. This is a skill I have been developing both through my formal studies to become a language teacher and my practical experience working as a teaching assistant in schools. These experiences have equipped me with a strong foundation in the scientific and technical aspects of language teaching, including lesson planning, classroom management, and tailoring instruction to individual needs. This structured approach ensures that my teaching is not only engaging but also results-driven.
3. Teaching as an Art Form
Lastly, teaching is an art that depends on the character and temperament of the teacher. To be successful, a teacher must be patient, open, and encouraging, providing students with the confidence they need to succeed. I believe my natural temperament aligns perfectly with these qualities. I am deeply committed to fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel valued and motivated. My background and outlook enable me to connect with learners on a personal level, ensuring that their journey is not only educational but also enriching and inspiring.

I aim to meet you where you're at and work from there. I believe that students get the most out of any learning journey when there’s a clear direction and goal. We’ll start by identifying what you want to achieve and why. Having a rough roadmap is key, as it helps us navigate the complexities of the French language together and stay motivated. Each milestone we reach will be celebrated and appreciated, keeping you engaged and focused on progress.
Once we’ve established your goal—whether it’s learning the basics for travel, mastering written French for exams, or something else—I will adapt my teaching style to suit your needs. Together, we’ll create a clear outline with achievable steps.
I also believe learning should be enjoyable. While French can be complex and at times challenging, it’s also a fascinating and beautiful language. When approached in the right way, there’s a lot of fun to be had.
I teach students of all ages and skill levels. Lessons typically last an hour, but this is flexible based on your preferences. I’ve been working in schools across London for over a year and have experience tutoring both English and French. In 2019, I received my French Baccalauréat from the Lycée International de Londres.
