About Michael
Beginning at age 7, I started with the violin. My 1st two violins fell apart the day I got them literally! Set me back 2-3 months in class. Finally, my 3rd violin, a pawnshop special worked out. I soon excelled past everyone, playing afterschool in the honors orchestra, taking private lessons and sitting first chair up till age 13. That's when I discovered the electric guitar and bands like Metallica and artists like Joe Satriani. Bach and Paganini didn't seem as interesting anymore. Other influences are Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Eric Johnson, Kirk Hammett, David Gilmore, Jimmy Page and Hendrix to name a few. I basically applied everything from my classical violin day's to my guitar playing, as far as reading and sight reading sheet music, theory, etc. I went through a few instructors early on before finally settling down with my last teacher, who was a jazz and flamingo playing master. I studied for an hour/ week, for approximately 6 months with him and immediately got results. Even with a 5+ year background in classical violin, I still encountered roadblocks trying to figure it out myself, occasionally wanting that next level. Starting from the ground up, I would focus on the core fundamentals and make sure they are ingrained in the mind of the student. I don't believe in altering one's style if they already have something going. Take Eddie Van Halen for example. No one has he's style and you can recognize it from the first note. But, he also has a solid foundation in theory from he's piano playing prior to guitar mastery. Point being, I'll approach every student differently based on skill. I don't want to turn out clones but help you find your own sound.
