I have a passion for helping students understand how various cultural, political, religious, literary, and intellectual currents all come together in history. My students learn to see history not as a series of dates and events to be memorized but as a way to catch a glimpse into a vibrant and interesting past world. I believe that the best way to learn history and make it come alive is to work with primary source documents and to practice academic writing skills.
I am a historian by training and hold an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Heidelberg University in Germany. I received my B.A. in history from Simon Fraser University. My research focuses on nineteenth-century American Spiritualism, a religious movement based on the belief that people can communicate with spirits. I am fascinated by the ways that people's beliefs are both influenced by the surrounding culture but also help shape it. In addition to my interest in American religion, however, I have an interdisciplinary background that includes politics, literature, and general American history.
I have taught American history from the colonial period through to the twentieth century. I have tutored students and taught courses in history at Heidelberg University as well as the University of Notre Dame. I also have experience teaching English as a second language at the Berlitz Language School. I have also worked as a research assistant for a Canadian history textbook.
