About Jon

Graduating in 1997, I began my teaching career as a primary teacher. Then, around 14 years ago, I made the transition from primary to secondary. This came about because of a long term supply post, in which I worked alongside a year 5 boy and helped him make the transition from special needs base to the main classroom. His mum was part of a pastoral team at a local secondary, and so when they had a maternity cover come up, she recommended me. In a similar way, my tutoring career started when one of the teaching assistant’s I worked with in year 10 approached me and asked if I could work with her daughter. For me, the fact that both of these pivotal moments have come about because of parental approval is what motivates me, as I would much rather be someone that people trust and respect, rather than a walking calculator with no personality. I learnt to love maths, and I am confident I can do the same for you.

About the lesson

If you are someone that struggles with maths, or wishes they could give it up when they choose their options, then I could be just what you’re looking for… My main strengths are the ability to tease out a concept (no tricks), and nurture a deep conceptual understanding of the subject. During your hour with me, you will be given the opportunity to choose the focus of the session, whether that be a piece of homework, something in class you’ve struggled with, or even that you want to get ahead with the next topic so you are a bit of an expert, we will work to make this happen. As we approach exams, we will go through past papers, as well as any revision you need. My experience of marking GCSE maths papers for some of the leading exam boards in the UK give me that extra potential to help you to understand exactly what examiners are looking for, and so ultimately how to ace your exam!

No words can describe how valuable Jon has been to us. He managed to take a maths petrified teenager and turn her into a confident young lady. She has just sat her last maths GCSE and found it easy!!!!!!! Jon takes an interest in his pupils and puts them at ease immediately.
