About Andy

I have a very broad applied engineering experience and much experience teaching students at degree level. I am now working in industry, but am keen to support the next generation of engineers through tutoring and teaching. I am a qualified Mechanical Engineer with experience in energy systems and thermofluids, high voltage electrical plasmas, materials and chemical engineering. I am currently managing a R&D department in industry. I have worked on research projects across the on- and off-highway automotive industry in topics covering heat transfer, energy systems, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. I have acted as expert for DEFRA's Air Quality Expert Group, electric vehicle evidence statements and Natural Environment Research Council. I have been external examiner at Oxford Brookes University, as well as advising the Energy Technologies Institute. I have worked as a senior lecturer and programme director on IMechE accredited courses at Loughborough University and University of Chester, with almost 20 years teaching experience. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have taught classes of 200+, but much prefer tutoring one-to-one.

About the lesson

Study support: I can use my years of teaching experience to support you in understanding the study material and courses you are already studying, developing your fundamental understanding of the subject matter, your ability to work with it to solve tutorial and assessment questions, and your ability to apply it to real world problems. Lessons are typically led by your needs, either tutoring in parts of the subject you are struggling with, to supporting tutorial and past exam question attempts, or extending your understanding beyond that covered on your course. Bespoke courses: I can develop courses specifically to suit your needs, taking you from a general education level of Physics knowledge to being able to work competently within engineering thermodynamics. A typical lesson is 1 hour long, but can be longer. I have developed multiple thermodynamics modules at Universities, am Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and work full time in energy and applied thermodynamic research. I have access to much additional material to bring to the lessons. Online lessons include screen sharing, visualisers for sketching, writing and derivations, and where appropriate, showing examples of equipment.
