About Ryan

I have been teaching chess for 20+ years, which includes group teaching for 2 different chess organizations and also private chess lessons. I have helped all students improve their skill level dramatically, and many have become champions. In addition to teaching, I have been playing chess for 32+ years, of which 15+ years have been competitive in tournaments. I won the u1600 rating section of the Western States Open tournament at the Sands Regency in Reno, Nevada in 2002. I also defeated the Nevada State Chess Champion in 3 out of 6 rated tournament games in 2010.

About the lesson

I offer personalized online chess lessons for kids and adults from beginner level up to a rating of 1700.

I have over 20 years of teaching experience and more than 15 years of competitive chess experience. My students have made strong improvement in both skill and confidence, and one of my students became the Nevada Scholastic State Champion in the K–3 section. Many other students have also won regional school and individual chess championships in Northern Nevada.

I teach all areas of chess, including tactics, openings, middlegame planning, endgames, and game analysis. I also review student games and give clear, practical advice to help them improve as quickly as possible.

My teaching style is adapted to each student’s needs and goals. Online lessons are especially effective because I can quickly change positions, highlight key squares, draw arrows, and move through games efficiently.

Whether you are learning chess for the first time, trying to improve your tournament results, or looking for a strong coach for your child, I would be happy to help.

Perfect! Ryan is fabulous! He is kind, patient, and always willing to adjust to help you learn in whatever way is best for you. I truly appreciated him taking me from a total novice to someone who loves chess, plays multiple times a week, and feels like chess is now an integral part of my life.

Cady is a kind, hardworking chess student and it was a pleasure teaching her! She has applied the lessons I gave her and used them in her games against both human players and chess bots and has improved quite a bit (as measured by improved game ratings and also by the ratings of the higher level chess bots she was able to defeat) in the 9 months that I taught her.
