About Annie

I am a mechanical engineering student at Polytechnique Montréal. My average in French literature in CEGEP is 96%, and my overall academic average is 95%. Other than my studies in pure and applied sciences, I have completed a CEGEP course on tutoring written French. My entire education has been done in French and I currently study at a francophone university.

Furthermore, I was a translator and content reviser for the 12th edition of Otakuthon, which is a summer festival in Montreal. I worked on the official documents and the website of the festival in French and English. As a design project for school, I have also created a board game that helps to learn English, for which I have received an award at the Gala of Recognition of my high school.

As for my tutoring experience, I have given private home and online catch-up lessons, and I have also tutored students at my CEGEP. Furthermore, I have monitored the chemistry and math help centers of my CEGEP. I have tutoring experience in the following subjects: written French, secondary 5 mathematics (natural sciences sequence), differential calculus, integral calculus, linear algebra and vectorial geometry, mechanics, general chemistry, and solution chemistry. I have worked with students with ADHD and who required student accessibility services from CEGEP. In total (excluding the students I have helped while monitoring the help centers), I have tutored 9 students.

About the lesson

My lessons are geared toward all students from elementary school to CEGEP/pre-university, whether French is their first language or not. I can provide regular help with understanding homework and class material, speaking, writing, reading comprehension and proof-reading papers.

My teaching method depends on the needs specified by the student. In the first lesson, I evaluate and get to know the student’s level in French, and then I define clear learning objectives with the student. A typical class can consist of different activities, such as grammar exercises, writing, reading, reacting to a variety of subjects and discussing about them. I speak French, English, Mandarin and some Spanish, so I am able to give tips from my personal language-learning experience. I also give homework in my classes, which can include reading, watching shows or videos in French, exercises and writing texts. I make sure to balance theory and practice in my lessons so that they do not become contextless grammar drills. Instead, I aim to help the student learn in a more natural way but without neglecting linguistic rigor. When I teach grammar, I emphasize on the logic behind the rules and the similarities and differences between rules in order to aid the student in retaining them.

What makes me special as a tutor is that I am very organized, patient, enthusiastic and easy to talk to. Being in university and having learnt French as my second language, I can relate to my students, and understand their questions and struggles better.
