About Ali

I'm Ali Gharji, an academic English tutor with over 13 years of experience teaching and developing curriculum across international and UK education settings. I hold an MA in International Education and Development from the University of Sussex, a BA in English Language and Literature, and a Cambridge CELTA, along with a British Council Masterclass certification specifically in IELTS training.

My teaching background is broad: I've taught ESOL and academic skills at UK colleges and universities, supported EAL students in a London secondary school, and co-founded a language school that provides English and computer education to underprivileged communities. I've also coordinated scholarship programmes for underprivileged students and published a book on learning the Farsi alphabet for pre-schoolers.

What ties all of this together is a genuine interest in helping people build real, usable skills, whether that's a student aiming for a specific IELTS band score, an international student learning to write at distinction level, or a beginner building confidence in everyday English. I bring the same structured, evidence-based approach from my university lecturing work into every one-to-one lesson, tailored to what each student actually needs.

About the lesson

Every lesson is built around your specific goals, whether that's hitting a target IELTS or TOEFL band score, writing distinction-level academic essays, or building everyday English fluency. I offer IELTS preparation, TOEFL training, academic writing and research skills coaching, and general ESL lessons for adults, all delivered one-to-one online.

Sessions run for one hour over Zoom or Google Meet, at times that work around your schedule. Depending on your course, you'll get full practice tests, detailed written feedback on your work, and a personalised study plan that tracks your progress and adapts as you improve. I focus on practical, exam-relevant skills rather than generic grammar drills, so you make measurable progress towards the score or outcome you actually need.
