About Karla
Karla van Niekerk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on the 4th of October, 1999. She moved to Cape Town in 2007 and started playing the piano the same year, at the age of 8. In 2012, Karla started taking violin lessons and immediately fell in love with the instrument. She has performed in numerous concerts and bands, such as the Hillsong Church Worship band, the ensemble for a production of Beauty and the Beast, various church worship groups, and school orchestras. Karla often performs locally, collaborates with local artists, and arranges music for local schools, churches, and organisations. Karla enrolled for a Bachelor of Music degree in 2018, with violin as her main instrument, and graduated with a Music Theory and Composition specialisation in 2021. She is currently enrolled as a Master of Music student, specialising in composition, with an interest in pedagogical composition. Karla is employed as a full-time music educator at a primary school in Cape Town, where she is teaching Grade R, 5, 6, and 7 class music, as well as private violin, piano, and music theory lessons. She directs three school choirs, the school orchestra, and the violin ensemble. Karla was a violinist in the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra from 2018 to 2022, where she experienced playing various genres. She played in the university’s String Ensemble for two years during the Covid-19 pandemic, where she developed an interest in writing for string orchestras. Karla’s music is influenced by her research into historically informed practice in her Music Theory specialisation, her experience playing in orchestras, and her love for film music.

I am a music teacher teaching music theory and class music to all ages. I graduated with a degree in composition and music theory, and am currently working towards a master's degree in music composition. I have a passion for music theory and music analysis, and aim to instill that passion in all my students. I offer music theory lessons on online platforms, where I provide in-depth explanations for all theory-related topics, loads of free resources, and constant check-ins for support.
