About Emily

I am a first class Philosophy graduate from the University of Cambridge, and recent graduate from LSE with distinction MSc in Philosophy and Public Policy. I've been published twice, and have worked in a research position at the Uehiro Centre at Oxford University, on applied ethics. I achieved A* at A-Level, and am passionate about my subject. At Cambridge I received one on one tutorial sessions from world-class academics, and I want to be able to make that kind of learning more accessible to more people. My tutoring experience ranges from children to MA students, with over three and a half years of one on one tuition experience, as well as extensive experience teaching in lycées in France, so I'm well prepared for any kind of teaching.

Studying Philosophy at LSE for my MSc and at Cambridge for my BA has given me a profound understanding of philosophical concepts, which I am eager to share with my students. My goal is to help you excel in philosophy, whether you need support with Oxbridge personal statements and interviews, detailed supervision and feedback for essays and coursework, or guidance on effective essay writing and interview techniques. My teaching style is interactive and mentorship-driven. Drawing from my experiences at Cambridge, I design my sessions to mirror the university's rigorous approach, focusing on the development and in-depth discussion of assigned work while clarifying complex concepts. Each course is tailored to your specific goals, ensuring a stimulating and engaging learning experience. Philosophy is a fascinating subject, and I am passionate about helping you explore and appreciate its depth and breadth! With extensive experience tutoring a diverse range of students—from young learners to MA candidates—I am equipped to meet your individual needs. I have a strong track record of helping students achieve top grades, including first-class distinctions on essays, and a high success rate with Oxbridge entrance exams. I am well-versed in AQA A-level, OCR A-level, and IGCSE curricula, providing comprehensive and tailored support across these exam boards.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I've been interested in philosophy and politics since I was 14, when I first read 'The Republic' by Plato. Strangely, what cemented my interest was watching 'The Truman Show' soon after, and being blown away by the idea of general doubt! I decided to start tutoring when I started university, as a part-time job which would allow me to share philosophy with more people, in the way I wished I could have been taught. I loved it so much I never stopped!
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
My favourite topics to cover with students are usually political philosophy ones, but I also love it when students surprise me by making me see topics I usually wouldn't spend too much time on this with fresh eyes!
id you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My no-nonsense RPE teacher at secondary school is responsible for my interest in philosophy - she was harsh but fair, and I always try and capture her enthusiasm and skill in my own teaching.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
A good tutor has to be, first and foremost, patient. That means listening to your students as much as possible, to make sure they're learning to the best of their ability
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school
The first philosophy class I had in sixth form, we looked at Berkeley's idealism. I was so taken with it that I decided then and there to do philosophy at university - and bored all my friends by talking about it!
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
When I started philosophy, I struggled with clarity in my essay writing, and it took me a while to gain that valuable skill of clear and direct communication. It's such a useful thing to be able to do, and I love transmitting that to others.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I love feminist philosophy, and have an ambition to be published in the journal 'Hypatia' some day!
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
My dedication! I'm proud of how creative and engaging my lessons are, and spend a lot of time planning them. It definitely pays off!!
