About the lesson

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement; nothing can be done without hope and confidence”. A quote by Helen Keller that I use to inspire my students, as I am passionate about helping students improve and aiding them grow in confidence in their abilities.

I am an ambitious, extremely organised professional with the capability of working within a fast paced and challenging environment. I am currently a qualified science teacher, with a Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) degree, working in an outstanding secondary school. I have extensive tutoring experience in the 11 plus, SATs, KS3 science and maths, GCSE science, A-level chemistry and biology. My present job as a science teacher allows me to assist my students in comprehending difficult scientific concepts and consolidating understanding, as well as gaining exam practice to apply what they have learnt and learning a variety of revision techniques. My current position has enabled me to have a secure understanding of the syllabus of the subjects I teach and what examiners are looking for from students.

I have tutored for several years since university, and I have regularly produced exceptional results within my students of different abilities, pushing their grades from C’s or D’s to A*’s or A’s. Under the new GCSE specification, 100% of my tutees accomplished grades 7-9 (equivalent to A/A*). This is down to helping students believe in themselves and guaranteeing understanding in topics they are struggling in. I truly enjoy working with students and am able to develop a positive rapport with my tutees. For me, tutoring is about helping students to fulfil their potential as well as seeing tutees learn something they didn’t initially understand.

In my first tuition session with a student, I start by discussing their individual requirements and which topics will require more focus on in the syllabus. I tend to begin by going over the fundamentals of the topic, and by checking the full understanding of the student. Once this has been established, I use numerous teaching methods to push students further, supported with practise in past papers to improve their exam techniques. Understanding is also thoroughly monitored every lesson. I always recommend my tutees to give feedback, in order for them to obtain better value from their tuition lessons. I also communicate and provide feedback to parents about areas that require improvement and advice they need on ways to support their child at home. When tutoring in all subjects, I ensure students gain plenty of exam practice, as it is a good method of revising content and enhancing exam skills. However, I also relate topics to real- life concepts to engage my tutees and make their understanding of the topic easier.
