About Nicholas
This year I am in my second year at the University of Otago working towards a Law and Science degree majoring in Oceanography with a minor in Mathematics. I have academic leadership experience, having been a class representative for Earth and Ocean Science (2020) and for Second Year Law (2021).
I am interested in a variety of things such as enjoying the great outdoors whether that be tramping or running in the natural environment. I am also passionate about science, debating, writing, following current affairs and educating myself and those around me.
Some achievements:
• University Debating (domestic) - Otago 3 at Joynt Scroll (2021)
• University Debating (international) - Otago A at Doxbridge 4 (2021), Otago 2 at Zagreb Open (2021).
• College Premier A Debating - won Wellington Speaking Union Impromptu Cup in 2018 and won the New Zealand Schools Debating Council Regional Competition in 2019.
• Participated in Bull Gully Junior Mooting Competition 2021
• Participated in Chapman Tripp Junior Negotiations Competition 2021
• 2nd Place Victoria University of Wellington Chemistry Quiz
• Completed a 21-day Outward Bound course in December 2019
• Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver
• 1st Place in Year 11 Chinese and 1st Place in Year 10 Science at Wellington College

I have 4 years tutoring experience in NCEA Maths and Chemistry at levels 1, 2 and 3. I went to Wellington College and received NCEA endorsed with Excellence at all levels. I think it is important to individualise lessons and tailor content, style and length to suit the needs of the student. Generally, lessons last around 1 hour. I tutor Maths and Chemistry at all NCEA levels. I also tutor English, Classical Studies and Geography all NCEA levels including NZ Scholarship. I have experience tutoring junior students too. I start by assessing the student's ability, then help them build up to the more advanced content. I tutor students to think critically and achieve academically by challenging them with concepts and examples. I do not do the work for students, I help students understand new concepts to make them better learners. I place an emphasis on student wellbeing, ensuring lessons are fun and suit students with different abilities and learning styles.
