About Paul

Fresh out of the university of Southampton with a degree in Physics, I was not quite sure what I wanted to do with myself. I stumbled across an advertisement to teach English in China and ended up from there spending around 5 years teaching English all over Asia, gaining a CELTA certificate and learning Asian languages as a hobby.

I eventually grew home-sick and came back to the UK to get into education. I worked for a year and a half as a teaching assistant and used my Chinese language skills to organise a school culture exchange trip to China.

I decided I really did enjoy working in schools and decided to qualify as a teacher of science. I worked for 10 years as a science teacher in state schools and in the latter half of that period started to privately tutor in Science and Mathematics alongside of this.

Towards the end of my time in schools I gradually phased into a full time self-employed tutor and eventually gained enough credibility as a skilled online tutor that I ended up running some seminars and coaching programmes on how to teach online during the pandemic.

About the lesson

As your tutor I will support you and give you confidence in the subject(s) and topics you feel you need most help in. I will explain things clearly and patiently leading you to enjoy learning and feeling good about the subject again. The vast majority students I have taught in the 17 years I have been teaching say they really enjoy my lessons and regularly tell me they learn 5 times faster with me than in their school lessons and 10 times faster than when they study alone. I feel it is my job to ensure my students go away with the tools to be able to teach themselves.

Using a variety of interactive tools I am able to teach students online in a very engaging and clear way. During lessons I make recordings of the different parts of the lesson whenever I am explaining a new concept or how to do a question which are then embedded into the whiteboard which the student can access whenever they like to re-watch my explanations and have a go at similar exercises which I provide.
As a teacher, my main goal is to try and get as many 'Wow!'s a day as I think learning should be engaging and inspiring and I think it is one of the biggest failings of society that so many people get put off learning.

I focus on deep understanding of topics and skills and methods on how to learn first. Once the student has the skills, and a strong foundational understanding of a topic, they can be a lot more productive in between our sessions. If I end up doing my job well enough that the student no longer needs my help and can continue on their own, I see this as a success and in terms of a business plan it works better anyway as they are more likely to recommend me to someone else. I realise that as a client you are investing your time as well as your money in my sessions and so I work hard to ensure my lessons are worth both.
Students will also have access to a very extensive resource database which includes thousands of organised and labelled simulations, assessments, revision notes and suggested reading in the different subjects and topics I teach.
