About Sean

I am a First Class History graduate from the University of Nottingham that loves reading and the pursuit of greater knowledge. Teaching family friends' children and younger relatives whilst completing my A-Levels was my gateway into teaching and I have continued this throughout my Undergraduate degree! This has now continued as I now work towards completing my postgraduate master's degree in Law.

A typical lesson is 1 hour long and will have a structure that the student will quickly become familiar with. Quickly starting off with a recap of the previous week before introducing a new topic by going through an example question. We then focus on the student answering booklet questions (that I have provided) with guidance, eventually working our way to an independent level of working. At this point we will heavily focus on past paper questions as these will be vital to a student seeking a grade 9. Of course, this structure can easily be changed dependent on the student as not everyone works in the same way, so by working together we will find our strongest methods of teaching and lesson structure. Our introduction lesson together will be a chance to introduce ourselves to each other while also understanding what needs to be worked upon. Going through mistakes will be our greatest strength so I put a great emphasis on trying to get past papers back from the school to go through!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always had an interest Mathematics since as young as I can remember, loving to complete problems, puzzles and challenge myself. This natural interest transferred itself to my love of applied maths and my in-depth studies of Physics, always having a deep intrigue into Astrophysics. I started tutoring mathematics just after I had passed my GCSEs (when it was fresh in mind) to family friends and by word of mouth I ended up building a network!

My passion for History, on the other hand, came much later in life being sparked by trips to Europe. Thereafter I have been obsession with European history planning any holidays around it. I have carried that obsession through my GCSEs to my bachelor's degree. It was during my bachelor's where I found enjoyment in teaching and been doing it since!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love applied Maths, whether that be in Physics or Chemistry or economics. Within mathematics itself I have always had a soft spot for mathematical statistics and probability theory.

In History I love any topic that I can learn new things, but I have spent, by far, the most amount of time on the histories of Russia, Germany, and Italy.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Growing up I was lucky to have a great family that provided me with many role models over the years.

For Maths my inspiration was a Mr Lance and for History both Mr Brown and Smith.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

First and foremost, having good organisational skills! Always listening to your student and making sure that there is a conversation going both ways. There is no point in just speaking to a student and expecting them to understand it the first time, making sure they understand that it is OK to not understand the first time is vital!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    "Perseverance, secret of all triumphs."
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Time is my worst enemy in many respects, and I'm sure that will never change.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is a great passion of mine, but my favourite part in any subject in the research aspect. Independently finding information that can completely change an essay is immensely satisfying while also immensely insightful. I love learning and being taught new things myself!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Hopefully all of what I have answered above! 😊
