About John
I have a wide-ranging and life-long interest in the sciences, especially Biology and Environmental Sciences, and within these ecology, conservation, population and climate change. I have been an environmental consultant and trainer, and managed two environment-based firms. I worked in the bio-sciences industries and for the UK government here and overseas. As a tutor I take a keen interest in developments in the sciences in general, especially advances in genetics research and medical technology. My aim is to stimulate students to explore the sciences and expand their knowledge and enquiry.

Sessions are invariably tailored specifically to the student’s needs and ability. Every student is an individual, with individual needs. Thus I work to the student's strengths and needs, reinforcing classroom learning and encouraging exploration. I employ a range of practical and written resources and copious notes. A typical 1-hour session will begin with checking basic understanding of the current topic and filling any gaps. Then we will move on to developing the topic further. Where appropriate, I draw on my personal experience and expertise, and sessions are reinforced with my own written notes and exam questions from past papers. I recognise the anxiety caused by public examinations, and place particular emphasis on confidence-building and exam technique as the exam season approaches. I previously taught KS3 & 4 (secondary) to KS5 (Sixth Form) in both the state and private sectors. I have a BSc in Zoology (St Andrews); MSc in Freshwater Biology (London); Advanced Diploma in Environmental Decision-Making (OU); and PGCE (Portsmouth). I have worked in industry and for the UK government here and overseas, and thus can offer my students a wide perspective. I speak fluent Spanish & German. I work online, or students come to me or I go to them in Petersfield and surrounding area.

I can highly recommend John as an A Level tutor in Biology and Environmental Sciences. He has excellent academic degree and further qualifications in these subjects. He also teaches the other Sciences and Maths to GCSE. He is always very committed to his students' success, taking care to teach them from their current understanding towards their best possible outcome. He has done tutoring to A level for several years. I'm a teacher and have known John for many years, and our careers overlapped at Reeds School Cobham for a couple of terms, where he taught mainly A level Biology. He's a good class teacher but is definitely at his best on a one-to-one with students. He is utterly trustworthy and invests a lot of time in planning his lessons.
During my time doing A-levels John supported me through biology and Environmental Science. John is an excellent tutor and really helped me gain exam confidence through lessons tailored to my needs and working on past papers together, I struggle with dyslexia and John made hard concepts easy for me to understand. At the start of collage I was predicted a D grade in biology but with his patient and clear teaching I was able to feel more prepared and motivated and achieved a B grade as my final result, this has enabled me to go onto higher education at university, doing what I love!
I definitely recommend John as a tutor to anyone wanting to gain more confidence in their learning.View more recommendations
