Teaching philosophy:

I believe in centers on building conceptual understanding through active engagement and differentiated instruction. Rather than simply showing students how to solve problems, I guide them through the "why" behind mathematical concepts, helping them develop critical thinking skills and mathematical reasoning. I incorporate multiple teaching techniques to accommodate different learning styles, including visual aids, hands-on manipulatives and interactive problem-solving. My sessions emphasize the importance of mistakes as learning opportunities that students feel comfortable and safe asking questions and exploring solutions without fear of judgment.

Typical Lesson Plan:

Each 60-minute session follows a structured yet flexible framework :

Warm-Up (5-10 minutes): We begin by reviewing previous concepts and addressing homework questions to build continuity and confidence.

Objective Setting (5 minutes): Together, we establish clear, achievable goals for the session, ensuring students understand what they'll accomplish.

Guided Instruction (15-20 minutes): I introduce new techniques through demonstrations, visual explanations, and collaborative exploration, continuously checking for understanding through targeted questions.

Guided Practice (15-20 minutes): We work through problems together, with me providing decreasing levels of support as the student demonstrates mastery.

Independent Practice (10-15 minutes): Students tackle problems on their own while I observe, offering encouragement and strategic hints rather than direct answers.

Assessment and Reflection (5-10 minutes): We review progress, celebrate successes, and identify areas for continued focus. I provide constructive feedback and assign purposeful homework that reinforces the session's concepts.

What Sets Me Apart

With a bachelor's degree in mathematics and over 20 years of experience applying mathematical concepts in professional IT and data architecture roles, I bring real-world context to abstract mathematical ideas. My technical background allows me to demonstrate how algebraic thinking and geometric reasoning apply to careers in technology, engineering, and data modelling, making mathematics relevant and inspiring for students.

I combine academic rigor with practical problem-solving approaches, emphasizing not just correct answers but the development of mathematical thinking and problem-solving strategies that extend beyond the classroom. My experience working with complex systems has taught me patience, systematic thinking, and the ability to explain intricate concepts in accessible ways.

Who These Lessons Are For

I provide tutoring services for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 across all mathematics levels, including:

Elementary (K-6): Number sense, basic operations, fractions, geometry, measurement, and early problem-solving skills

Middle School (7-9): Pre-algebra, algebra fundamentals, ratios and proportions, integers, basic statistics, and geometry

High School (10-12): Algebra I & II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus

My sessions are tailored to diverse student needs, whether supporting students who are struggling with foundational concepts, helping average students build confidence and consistency, or challenging advanced learners who seek enrichment beyond their curriculum. I work with students preparing for standardized tests, those recovering from learning gaps, and individuals seeking to accelerate their mathematical understanding.
